If you live with past trauma, you’re not alone..
Many individuals will experience trauma, and possibly PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder, at some point in their lives. The National Center for PTSD estimates about 60% of men and 50% of women will experience at least one trauma in their life.
PTSD is a condition that develops after experiencing a potentially traumatic event and can lead to sleep disturbances, depression and anxiety, emotional instability, and reduced social skills. The impact of PTSD can be crippling. For men, the trauma is typically related to assault, accidents, combat, disaster, or to witness death or injury, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Women are more likely to experience sexual assault or abuse that is traumatic.
During April, we recognize Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month to share knowledge about sexual violence and the potential effects of living with trauma related to sexual assault. Every 73 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted, according to RAINN, and for the hundreds of individuals who are affected by these traumas every day, the recovery process can be challenging.
Find Individualized Treatment for Recovery
If you suffer from PTSD or past trauma that resurfaces in your life, you know the challenge of finding effective treatment, especially as traditional prescription medications may have damaging side effects or be ineffective.
Similarly, holistic treatment must address trauma in biological, psychological, and sociological aspects of a survivor’s suffering, especially as it relates to survivors of sexual assault.
The most heavily researched treatments for PTSD and other traumas are trauma-focused psychotherapies, including commonly used techniques like eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), cognitive processing therapy, and prolonged exposure.
Processing the physical self-care and emotional self-care after trauma can feel overwhelming, including maintaining healthy sleep habits or rituals and finding daily routines that help start and end each day.
