Endometriosis: Finding Relief for a Painful Condition

Endometriosis, a condition that affects an estimated 6 million women in the United States, can cause excruciating pain and inflammation. According to the Office on Women’s Health, endometriosis happens when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus and in other places of the body. These growths can lead to extreme pain and difficulty getting pregnant, and endometriosis may impact digestive woes and bleeding or spotting between periods.

When these benign growths occur outside the uterus, women affected by endometriosis may experience pain, swelling, and bleeding. Additionally, the growths may lead to inflammation, scar tissue and adhesions, or create problems with the intestines and bladder. While there’s no known cause of endometriosis, there are various treatment options available, including specific medications, such as hormonal treatments, surgery to eliminate scar tissue and remove endometriosis patches, and alternative therapies, including acupuncture.

Getting to the Source of Pain from Endometriosis

If you suffer from endometriosis or have a loved one who does, you understand the crippling pain and inconsistencies this condition causes, limiting your ability to function at home or in the workplace. Many women try everything—NSAIDs, heating pads, Epsom salt baths, and prescription pain medication.

Some people suffering with endometriosis may explore cannabis for pain relief.

While the role of cannabidiol, or CBD, isn’t wholly understood or researched for its therapeutic effects on pain related to endometriosis, studies are underway to better understand the role of endocannabinoids involved in endometriosis, as well as the affects of delta 9 THC in its ability to reduce pain, currently only studied in mice. A clinical trial is underway to evaluate the effectiveness of CBD in patients with endometriosis.
